‘What is a succulent’ is one of the most searches for terms when it comes to these popular plants, and it’s not hard to see why! The word ‘succulent’ actually derives from the Latin word ‘succus’ which means ‘sap’ or ‘juice’ thanks to the fact that these plants are known for retaining water pretty well.
In general, a succulent is a plant which thicky/ fleshy leaves which have a tendency to be able to retain their water (thus meaning that succulent plants, in general, require less water than their other plant counterparts).

The difference between a succulent and a cactus
Perhaps most confusingly of all, many people don’t actually realise that cacti are actually a type of succulent! Yes, you read that correctly! However, worth noting is that while all cactus are succulents, not all succulents are cactus.
